Twitter's number of unique visitors has surpassed that of the New York Times according to http://budurl.com/TwittervNYT According to Compete.com, Twitter grew by 76.8% in March to rise to position #72--well into the top hundred websites.
At the end of March the Times still held position #52, but based on Twitter's trajectory, it is expected to pass NYT's ranking before month-end. While the Time grew by a respectable 3.7% for the month, and has an annual 22.1% growth rate, Twitter's annual growth rat is a breath taking 1,202.2%.
It's true that the two entities are very different in focus and purpose and each plays an important role in its sphere. Imo, regardless of the New York Times' ranking, as a provider of journalism it has an important role to play.
But the lesson is clear--Twitter is becoming an increasingly busy place.
